Grammar and Writing Level 1
Course Description:
Students will be introduced to basic affirmative and negative statements and questions in simple tenses. Course emphasis is on the practice of various structures orally as well as in writing. Students will also learn how to produce well-written basic sentences.
Course Objectives:
After completing this course, the student will be able to:
◊ write affirmative, negative, and question sentences with the appropriate short answers responses using the following verb tenses:
- “BE” present and past
- simple present and past
- present continuous
- future “be going to”
- the modal “CAN”
◊ form grammatically correct sentences using:
- prepositions
- subject pronouns
- possessive adjectives
- singular, plural, and possessive nouns
- the following demonstrative adjectives: “this”, “that”, “these”, and “those”
- “There are” and “There is” sentence structures
◊ identify sentence components (subject, verb, and object/complement) and the following parts of speech: noun, verb, adjective, article, and preposition

In this course, you will be evaluated in the following way:
Grammar 40%
Writing 30%
Grammar Final Test 10%
Writing Final Test 10%
Homework and Active Participation 10%
Total 100%
NOTE: The Grammar Final will be on Wednesday of Week 10.
Grading Scale (passing) (non-passing)
A+= 98 -100%
A = 93 - 97% C- = 70 – 72%
A- = 90 - 92% D+= 68 – 69%
B+= 88 - 89% D = 63 - 67%
B = 83 - 87% D- = 60 – 62 %
B- = 80 - 82% F = 59% and below
C+= 78 - 79%
C = 73 - 77%
NOTE: You must pass BOTH the grammar and writing with a 73% or above in order to pass this class.
